🌿 Roy Gibson
Roy Gibson saw that visitors coming to Mossman Gorge could learn from local people while creating opportunities for younger generations. In 1986 he began Dreamtime Walks, guided experiences sharing Kuku Yalanji culture and the rainforest environment. The larger cultural-centre idea developed from that work. Its significance was practical as well as cultural: tourism could support employment and give the community a stronger role in how its stories were presented. Gibson’s connection is lifelong local experience joined to an initiative that changed the relationship between visitors and the people whose Country they came to see.
🧭 Bennett Walker
Bennett Walker’s oral history connects Mossman Gorge with an earlier chapter of railway construction in Western Australia. As a young man he gained experience organising a work crew, then returned home and was approached to help lead construction of tracks, a bridge and visitor facilities at the gorge. The account gives a personal view of skills moving between distant workplaces and a home community. Later work included gathering historical knowledge. His contribution sits behind the paths people use, showing how practical leadership and local knowledge helped shape the experience of a much-visited place.
